The Origin
Some of our most cherished family memories came from the simplest traditions. This one started in Ohio — and it started with a run.
Ever since U.S. Army Basic Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, running had been a cornerstone of my life. It brought solace and clarity. It quieted my mind and gave me space to think — or sometimes not think at all. My own moving meditation.
One morning after a run, still sweaty and energized, I walked into the house and made an announcement: "Today is Sweaty Hat Day. Get up, get dressed — let's go."
While Christine, Derek, Alise, AnneMarie, and Danielle stumbled out of bed, I grabbed a pencil and some scrap paper, tore it into pieces, and scribbled down different activities on each one. After everyone loaded into our trusty green minivan, I held up my sweaty running hat.
"The entire day," I told them, "will be determined by whatever activity is pulled from this hat."

The Magic
Our son Derek — grimacing — was the first brave soul to reach in. I honestly don't remember what the slip said, or even what we did that day. What I do remember is the feeling: pure joy. The laughter. The spontaneity. The time together.
That was enough to make it stick.
Over time, Sweaty Hat Day evolved. Christine and I would brainstorm ideas in advance — fun outings, new restaurants, even a few household errands cleverly disguised as adventures. The beauty was never really in what we did. It was in the freedom of letting the day unfold together. The randomness was the magic.
Even Christine, who was initially horrified by the sweaty hat, came to love those days.
The Brand
We kept the tradition alive through the teenage years, college breaks, family vacations, and even after Christine’s return to our Lord. Karlene (widowed as well) joined the family and life remains joyful and full now with our expanded family. Blended and blessed! The activities changed or time, but the heart of it never did.
Sweaty Hat with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office — a family tradition that became something we're genuinely proud of.
We didn't have a long list of family traditions. But we held tightly to the ones we did.
Sweaty Hat is built on that same spirit — the belief that the best moments aren't planned perfectly. They're lived fully, with the people who matter most.
